How to buy Monero with cash
Cash is the most private way to buy Monero: there's no bank statement, card record or account linking the purchase to you. There are three practical ways to do it — by mail, in person, and via a Monero-capable ATM. Here's how each works and how to stay safe.
Set up your wallet first. Install Cake Wallet on your phone so you can show a receive QR and confirm arrival on the spot. Wallet guide →
1 · Cash by mail (P2P)
On a Haveno-based peer-to-peer marketplace you can select "cash by mail" as the payment method. The seller's XMR is locked in decentralized escrow, you post the agreed cash, and when it arrives the escrow releases the Monero to your wallet.
- Install a Haveno-based P2P app and fund the small security deposit it requires.
- Choose a "cash by mail" sell offer in your currency; the XMR moves into escrow.
- Mail the cash exactly as agreed (well concealed, tracked if the offer requires).
- Escrow releases the XMR once the seller confirms receipt.
Tip: start with a small first trade to learn the flow, and only deal with counterparties who have reputation/escrow behind them.
2 · In person
Meet a seller locally and trade cash for Monero sent to your phone wallet immediately.
- Find a seller via a P2P app's in-person option or a local Monero meetup/community.
- Meet in a public place — a café, not a car park.
- Hand over cash, watch the XMR arrive in your wallet, and wait for it to show as confirmed before you both leave.
Safety: keep amounts reasonable, don't advertise that you carry cash or crypto, and verify the transaction on your own screen — not the seller's.
3 · Monero ATM
Some crypto ATMs support Monero. Insert cash, scan your wallet's receive QR, and the machine sends XMR to you. It's instant and cash-based, though fees and spreads run higher than online.
- Find a machine that lists Monero support on a crypto-ATM map (e.g. CoinATMRadar).
- Open your wallet's receive QR before you start.
- Insert cash, scan, confirm — check the amount shown before finalizing.

The next most private option is a no-KYC swap: buy a common coin for cash where you can (ATM, gift card, P2P), then swap it to XMR with no account. Compare live rates on SwapRaven.
